چکیده

Head blight of wheat (FHB, scab) caused by Fusarium spp. is a severe fungal disease problem worldwide. Apart from yield and grain quality losses, the contamination of the harvest with toxic fungal metabolites, known as mycotoxins, is of serious impact. In spite of the fact that several sources for resistance against FHB have been found and utilized in hexaploid wheat, virtually no resistant tetraploid wheat cultivar has been identified so far. Wild emmer wheat, Triticum dicoccoides, previously identified as a rich source for disease resistance genes to several pathogens, was tested for resistance to FHB. Single point inoculations were applied to evaluate a set of 151 T. dicoccoides genotypes, originating from 16 habitats in Israel and one habitat in Turkey, for resistance to fungal spread (Type II resistance) in replicated greenhouse experiments. A considerable level of diversity was found among the tested genotypes, the broad sense heritability for Type II FHB resistance was 0.71. Among the eight T. dicoccoides lines with the lowest relative infection rates, five originated from the Mt. Gerizim population, and three from the Mt. Hermon population. These two habitats are characterized by a relatively cool and semi-wet climate. Hence, it may be possible that Fusarium occurrence in these habitats was responsible for natural selection in favor of resistance.

Identification of a Novel Fusarium Head Blight Resistance Quantitative Trait Locus on Chromosome 7A in Tetraploid Wheat.

ABSTRACT Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by Fusarium graminearum is one of the most destructive diseases of durum (Triticum turgidum sp. durum) and common wheat (T. aestivum). Promising sources of FHB resistance have been identified among common (hexaploid) wheats, but the same is not true for durum (tetraploid) wheats. A previous study indicated that chromosome 7A from T. turgidum sp. dicocc...

Mapping and Expression Analysis of a Fusarium Head Blight Resistance Gene Candidate Pleiotropic Drug Resistance 5 (PDR5) in Wheat

Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by Fusarium graminearum is a serious disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), through which grain quality losses are induced by fungal trichotecene mycotoxins such as deoxynivalenol (DON). A class of plasma membrane localized ABC transporter proteins related to the yeast PDR5 (pleiotropic drug resistance5) efflux pump seems to be responsible for partial resista...

Quantitative trait locus mapping of increased Fusarium head blight susceptibility associated with a wild emmer wheat chromosome.

Chromosome 2A of wild emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum var. dicoccoides) genotype Israel A increases Fusarium head blight (FHB) severity when present in durum wheat (T. turgidum var. durum) cv. Langdon (LDN). The goal of this study was to identify regions of Israel A chromosome 2A associated with this difference in resistance. A recombinant inbred chromosome line population (RICL) from a cross be...

Controlling fusarium head blight of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) with genetics

Fusarium head blight, one of the most destructive diseases of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), results in significant economic losses from reduced grain yield and quality. In recent decades, the disease has been frequently recorded, especially under warm and wet climatic conditions. Genetic resistance has engaged plant breeders because the use of resistant cultivars is the most economical, effecti...
